D-Day – landing in Normandy in 1944, Colossus and Cryptography

D-Day – landing in Normandy in 1944. was possible thanks to information obtained by cryptologists. The construction of the ciphertext decoding machine from the Lorenz machine by the Tutte team, (which the Allies have never seen before) is considered one of the greatest intellectual achievements of World War II. It made it possible to build a device called Colossus – probably the world’s first programmable digital machine for counting repetitions in a ciphertext. Thanks to the unusual combination of intelligent guessing, mathematical analysis, fault and failure resistance and mechanical computing power, the British were able to break German ciphertexts
